Robert Gilchrist (1797-1844)
Tyneside sailmaker and poetical writer

composed 150 original pieces of poetry and song, including two sonnets to the heroism of lifeboatwoman Grace Darling and three volumes of verse, Gothalbert and Hisanna (1822), A Collection of Songs, Local and Sentimental (1824) and Poems (1826). This website provides further information of his compositions, life and times.

The affective afterlife of poets' graves


A new book chapter from the project has been published in the edited collection Affective Architectures: More-Than-Representational Geographies of Heritage. The chapter describes my encounters with the graves of Tyneside poets and the search for the resting place of Robert Gilchrist.

Barge Day on the Tyne


Robert Gilchrist gave an eye-witness account to a familiar, though no longer performed, local ritual on the River Tyne. The Barge Day event was a significant civic occasion and Robert Gilchrist composed some amusing and patriotic songs to regale his friends as they processed along the river.
